Discover the extraordinary natural ice caves of the Kötlujökull glacier, an outlet of the mighty Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Named after the formidable Katla volcano that rests beneath the ice, this glacier is home to some of Iceland’s most striking frozen formations.
Departing from the coastal village of Vík, you will board a specially modified Superjeep for an off-road journey to the edge of the glacier. Equipped with the necessary safety gear, your guide will lead you into the heart of the glacier to explore the mesmerizing ice cave, where ancient blue ice contrasts dramatically with layers of dark volcanic ash.

- Child Car Seats: By Icelandic law, children under 135 cm must use a child car seat. The operator does not provide these; you must bring your own if traveling with a young child.
Good to Know
- Duration: 3 hours.
- Meeting Point: Behind the Icewear Store (Austurvegur 20, 870 Vík).
- Difficulty: Moderate. To access the ice cave, you must be able to walk approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) on uneven ground and climb a steep set of stairs with the assistance of a rope.
- Logistics: The off-road drive from Vík to the glacier edge takes about 45 minutes each way. There is a 10-minute walk from the parking area to the cave, where you will spend approximately 1 hour exploring inside.
- Health & Safety: Because you are entering a dark, enclosed space within the glacier, this tour may not be suitable for individuals with claustrophobia or a fear of the dark.
- Nature Dictates: Ice caves are natural, ever-changing formations. Their appearance, size, and safety accessibility vary daily and may not always reflect promotional photographs.
- Age Requirement: Minimum age is 8 years old.
